How to Prepare Your Dog for Their First Sitter
A little preparation makes the first visit easier for everyone, especially your dog.
By The Dog & District Team ·

Whether you're heading away for a weekend or starting a new job, the first time someone else looks after your dog can feel daunting. A bit of planning helps your dog feel secure and gives you peace of mind.
Before the first visit
- Arrange a meet-and-greet so your dog meets the sitter while you're there
- Write down feeding times, amounts and any medication instructions
- Note your vet's details and an emergency contact
- Show the sitter where leads, food, towels and poo bags live
- Mention anything your dog finds scary, from doorbells to hoovers
Keep routines familiar
Dogs take comfort in routine. Ask your sitter to keep mealtimes, walk times and bedtime as close to normal as possible, and leave your dog's usual bed and favourite toys in their usual places.
Stay in touch
A quick update and a photo go a long way. Agree in advance how often you'd like to hear from your sitter, so you can relax and enjoy your time away.
