Helping Your Puppy Feel Confident in London
Buses, buskers and bicycles: how to introduce a young puppy to city life gently.
By The Dog & District Team ·

London is an exciting place to grow up, but for a puppy it can also be overwhelming. The good news is that a calm, gradual introduction during puppyhood can help your dog feel at home in the city for life.
Go slowly and let your puppy watch
Start somewhere quiet, sit together and let your puppy simply observe the world going by. Reward calm curiosity. If your puppy seems worried, move further away; distance makes things easier to cope with.
Before your puppy has finished their vaccinations, follow your vet's advice. You can still carry them to watch traffic and people from a safe spot.
Little and often beats big days out
Short, positive experiences are far more useful than one busy trip to a crowded high street. Aim to end each outing while your puppy is still relaxed.
- Different surfaces: grass, gravel, metal grates
- Everyday sounds: sirens, buses, buggies, bikes
- People of all ages, wearing hats, hoods and helmets
- Calm, friendly dogs, met one at a time
Know when to ask for help
If your puppy seems persistently frightened, speak to your vet and consider a qualified behaviour professional. Early support makes a real difference.
